About Sangye Teresa O'Mara, LCSW

Sangye O'Mara

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who attended the University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work, receiving a Master of Science in Social Work degree in 1989.  During my career as a social worker, I have been employed in a variety of non-profit agencies and community mental health centers in and around the Austin area. My private practice has been in Austin and surrounding counties.  I have worked in hospice and hospital settings in Texas and northern California. From 2009 to 2013, I travelled to military installations in the United States and overseas providing counseling services to active duty military personnel and their families.

From the beginning of my social work career, my experience has been primarily with trauma survivors. They have shaped my therapeutic philosophy and taught me the importance of a safe and collaborative relationship in the healing process.  My exploration of ways to effectively treat trauma without further injury to the individual led to being trained in 1994 in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy, a treatment that harnesses the organism's drive to wholeness and provides rapid trauma resolution. I am an EMDRIA Certified Therapist in EMDR.

In 2000, I completed a two-year training in the Hakomi Method, a body-centered psychotherapy which integrates the body, mind, emotions and spirit through the practice of mindfulness.  I have been trained in clinical hypnosis through the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis.

Compassion, directness and humor characterize my therapeutic style.
